The Art of Selling Out…

MANY YEARS AGO… (2005) I USED TO STAY UP LATE AND TALK WITH MY COUSIN OVER THE TELEPHONE FOR HOURS AS WE WOULD ATTEMPT TO SHED LIGHT INTO THE DARKEST CORNERS OF OUR MINDS. WE EVEN CONSIDERED LETTING OTHER PEOPLE TAG ALONG IN THE CONVERSATIONS THROUGH AN INTERNET RADIO BROADCAST IN WHICH WE WOULD POST DAILY VIDEOS TO YOUTUBE. LISTENERS WOULD BECOME VIEWERS AS THEY COULD REWATCH EPISODES AS OFTEN AS THEY’D LIKE. WE CONSIDERED VIDEO CAMERAS, SWITCHERS AND CONDENSER MICROPHONES BUT OPTED TO DO NOTHING INSTEAD. THERE WAS A BELIEF THAT THROUGH OUR EFFORTS TO GO PUBLIC WE WOULD SOMEHOW LOSE THE SINCERITY OF OUR ORIGINAL TELEPHONE EXCHANGES. CONSTANTLY CENSORING OURSELVES UNDER THE WEIGHT OF EXPECTATION WHILE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WERE LISTENING. ANY INSINCERITY COULD EFFECTIVELY KILL THE SPIRIT OF THE PROGRAM AND WOULD NOT BE TOLERATED. FREE THOUGHT AT ALL COSTS… BUT I COULD NOT PAY THE HIGH PRICE OF SUCH EXPOSURE. ANY ATTEMPTS TO BRING MORE LIGHT INTO THE WORLD WOULD HAPPEN IN A DIFFERENT PLACE AND AT A DIFFERENT TIME BUT LIKE POWER LINES THAT STRETCH ACROSS THE SKY CONNECTING ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER EVEN ACROSS GREAT DISTANCES… THERE IS AN ART TO SELLING OUT… TRAVEL WELL.
